Working Parties

The society holds regular working parties, presently concentrating mainly on scrub clearance. As well as being a valuable start to the physical restoration of the canal, the work has halted further root damage to the structures and allowed further archaeological and survey information to be gathered.

Winter 2006/2007

Five weekends of working parties were held, again on the section above the railway culvert, working towards the Teignbridge Clay Cellars. The full width of the towpath, canal bank and bywash are now clear between the access point from East Golds works and the nature reserve, with only a small quantity of clearance still to be carried out on the railway side of the canal. This section of canal is on private land with no public access at present.

January/February 2006

Three weekends of working parties were held, again working on the section above the railway culvert, working towards the Teignbridge Clay Cellars. On one weekend we were joined by Officer Cadets from Britannia Royal Naval College, Dartmouth. The extra willing and hard working hands made a significant impact and the full width of the towpath, canal bank and bywash are now clear over more than half of this section. This section of canal is on private land with no public access at present.

Autumn 2005

Four weekends of working parties were held from August to December 2005. The remaining trees were removed from the canal between the railway culvert (lock 2) and the Teign Bridge clay cellars. Over a significant part of this section the canal, towpath and the area between the towpath and bywash are now clear of unwanted trees and vegetation. This section of canal is on private land with no public access at present.

January/February 2005

Four weekends of working parties were held in late January/early February 2005. A section of canal and towpath above the railway culvert (lock 2) was cleared of trees and scrub, and the towpath cleared to nearly meet up with the Teign Bridge clay cellars bywash work carried out the previous year. This section of canal is on private land with no public access at present.
