Chairman's Report No 25 - Autumn 2008

Taken from the society's quarterly newsletter:

The lease is progressing slowly, due to the holiday season it has been hard to arrange a meeting but now the children are back to school I am hopeful that we will have all parties sat around a table some time in mid October. Whilst on the subject of the lease I would like to thank Warren Douglas (Trust solicitor) Brian Pinnager (TDC solicitor) and John Pike for the limitless hours they have put in reading and rereading the lease and the countless letters and emails they have sent to move it on.

Your committee have between April and the end of July put in 572 hours on varying tasks: work parties each month, talks, putting on displays at functions, attending meetings and car boot sales. The team that go to the work parties each month could do with some mechanical help, they are becoming victims of their own success in that now that they have let the light in everything is growing quicker and they are having to go back over the ground they have cleared. So if you or you know of somebody who has an old ride on mower, doesn't matter how old or battered, please let George know. You will make his day. Now on the subject of the "STOVER CANAL" display tent we are willing to come to any village/church/society fete as long as there is no charge, the display tent measures 5 meters by 3 meters, it will stand on hard or soft ground and would be an asset to any fete, please contact me to book it. Thanks must also go to Pauline and Wendy for collecting and running the car boot. Well done girls. Again a great success.

The container is now on site, so now we have a place to put your unwanted tools, items for car boot or empty printer cartridges/old mobile phones. Jed Smith, George Whitehead, John Ellis and myself hold keys so give us a ring and collection will be arranged (telephone numbers inside the front cover of all newsletters).

To all of you who enquired about direct debit there was a problem in that your names did not show on the bank statement so memberships were not sent out, nor were newsletters, so we have opted for a standing order system instead. The treasurer has designed a form to cover this - please see enclosed form and instructions.

Lastly George and I took our display up to Bude for their Canal & Harbour Society open day, all went well till about 3pm, them the rain came down in buckets so that ended the display. A lot of new friends were made and they paid a visit to our canal last weekend and a most enjoyable time was had by all.
