A superb view of Jetty Marsh from Breakneck Hill, Newton Abbot, 1936. The larger building in the lower left is the repair shop. The slipway is just out-of-shot to the left. Jetty Marsh Locks (1 & 2) are just above the repair building, with the upper chamber of the staircase located under the railway bridge. From here the canal runs parallel to the railway off to the left. The Whitelake Channel runs across the bottom of the picture. The white bridge in the lower centre spans the bywash, which runs parallel to the canal all the way from Teign Bridge. Note the barges in the lower chamber which are covered to keep the clay dry while they wait for the tide. The clay pits just behind the railway are still being worked today.
